I feel like writing these Race Recaps gets a little more difficult with each passing year because how can I possibly write something better than the previous year? I’ve taken part in the Freeze Out 5k (to End Homelessness) since it first kicked off now five years ago. It’s been amazing to see the growth of the race from runners to the various perks that the Rescue Mission puts into place – finishers medals, glow gear, race shirts, free food, photo booth fun, pop up store, basket auctions and plenty more!
This year’s race was different for me. I most definitely put more emphasis on fundraising than on training. Training has been put on a back burner for various reasons, but mainly because I started a new job at the beginning of the year and I have been trying to get into a new routine with the training and changing schedule. A few more weeks and things will even off so that I can create a new routine that I believe will benefit an overall training schedule as well.
My fundraising goal this year was to raise $1500. I put together two online basket auctions that helped to raise over $500 combined. As I write this right now I stand at having raised $1,339.47. Short of my goal, but I’m not upset in that I set a new high mark for fundraising efforts, and the fact that it all goes to help the homeless here in the Central New York makes it all worth it.
With a lack of training my goal was to just go out and enjoy it with no major goal in terms of finishing time. I’m happy to report that I finished under 30 minutes and that’s pretty darn good for someone not in running shape. Two days later I am still having trouble walking, but in the end it was all worth it.
I am looking forward to once again riding the 40-mile course in the Ride & Run for the Rescue happening June 23, 2018. Be on the lookout for posts supporting the Rescue Mission once again, but before that I will be raising funds and awareness for ACR Health and the Annual Walk/Run which I will be taking part in the 10k race and looking to finish in the top 3 of my age group for the third year in a row!
